ILLUMINATIONAL DEBT

3124 Anno Domini, a thousand years after The Fall of civilization: the world is changed, and spare. Few human strongholds remain, the most gloried and mythologized being The Vatican. Its original hundred acres sprawled to cover three million square meters, a fortress city-state. 

Ever the studious and curious curate, Fran Lightheart was wont to sneak beneath the lowest level of the library to the secret stacks. Her fellow curate and paramour Younah Kant would invariably follow her down, because the dust, danger, and book smell got her excited. Happening upon a secret tome featuring a translation of the twenty-third chapter of St. John’s Revelations, she let out a squeal which alerted the prioress to their location. Excommunicated and put out on the road, they traveled across the land searching for any and all knowledge to enrich their experience of whatever life they could eke out of this bleak plane.

Still adorning their priestly Roman collars, they would repair machines, purify water, heal wounds, and teach skills at every encampment they encountered. Usually their efforts were rewarded with food and beds, but our story begins as they’re welcomed into a hidden cathedral by a mysterious stranger who’s saved their lives from an unknowable entity. Their love and their lives will be tested as they wield the light of a lantern and the lore of a leaden tome, traversing mountain caves and darkened halls, searching for the truth.
